According to an update on Star Poker’s social media channels, the poker rooms at both properties will open from midday on Friday – and from 10am each day starting Saturday – following the latest relaxing of COVID-19 restrictions by the state government earlier this month. Those include increasing capacity from one person per four square metres to one person per two square metres, and increasing the number of people allowed at each gaming table from four to seven.
As per the new restrictions, cash poker will return seven-handed.
The news sees Queensland continue to lead the way for Australian poker’s post-COVID comeback, with the Australian Poker Tour having held the first major tournament series since the start of 2020 at Brisbane’s Eatons Hill Hotel in October, followed by Check Raise Poker’s Queensland 6-Max Super Series and The APL Ville 600 in November.
There is no news yet on when tournament poker will return to either casino, nor whether the The Star Gold Coast will host the next WPT DeepStacks event, currently scheduled for 23 April to 3 May 2021.
It is also yet to be seen when Star will consider reopening its Sydney poker room, having cancelled all cash games and tournaments – including the Sydney Poker Championships and WSOP International Circuit Sydney – in April. The Star Sydney was last week granted permission to increase capacity from 1,800 to 10,000 patrons.
